Are you cleared for takeoff?

Step 1

Join the Academy of Model Aeronautics, or AMA. This organization provides oversight, and importantly, insurance, to protect you, the club, and the public. This membership is mandatory for per club charter. The new Intro Pilot program is here - before you commit to the hobby you can fly for 90 days under the supervision of our club instructor.

Join the AMA

Step 2

Understand the basic rules for how to fly safely by taking the FAA TRUST (The Recreational Uas Safety Test) course, provided by the AMA. It's FREE.

FAA TRUST

Step 3

Assuming you want to fly something heavier than 250 grams, and/or faster than 60 MPH, you'll need to register with the FAA. An Identification number will be assigned to you, and that number must be labeled somewhere on your aircraft where it can be seen.

FAA DroneZone

Step 4

SCAM's airfield has been officially recognized by the FAA as a FAA Remote Identification Area (FRIA). If your aircraft does not comply with Remote ID, you are only - legally - allowed to fly within a FRIA, and that special airspace is only granted to clubs like ours, so JOIN US!

What is Remote ID?

Step 5
